Step 1 · The portrait (the one big photo)

Which photo of them should the portrait be?

One photo becomes the portrait itself — them, as you’ll see them from across the room. A clear shot of their face works best.

    Not sure which one? Add two or three — I’ll make a free preview from more than one and you choose the one that looks most like them.

    Step 2 · Their photographs (the hundreds inside it)

    Bring them in, one photo at a time.

    Everything else goes inside it. Up close, the portrait turns out to be made of these.

    Fifty is enough to start — more is better, and I’ll say so if I need more. Select them all at once, and add more later whenever you find them — nothing here closes when you send.

    Send them all — blurry, dark, half a dozen of the same afternoon. Each one ends up the size of a fingernail, where blur turns into colour and nobody sees it. Quicker than it sounds: in your photo library search their name, or open their album and tap Select All.

    Your photographs are used to make your portrait and nothing else. I will never show them to anyone without asking you first — what happens to your photographs.

      How many photos? 100–300 is the sweet spot

      Anywhere from 100 to 300 is the sweet spot — not a rule, just what makes them look most like themselves. Each one becomes a tile in the mosaic, so a wider spread of moments means fewer repeats and a truer likeness.

      Not only photos of them, either — the trips you took, the places you loved together, the ordinary mornings. If it reminds you of them, it belongs in the portrait.

      Fewer is fine to start — if I need more to do them justice, I’ll simply ask before I begin. Blurry ones and near-duplicates are nothing to worry about: duplicates get removed, and I choose the portrait myself.

      The uploader above takes as many as you have — a thousand photos is no trouble for it, and uploading them yourself gets you the grid, the hearts and the crops. But if it’s easier to send a link — iCloud, Google Photos, Dropbox — paste it here and I’ll gather their photos from it myself.
