Before you begin

The questions people ask first.

Anything else, just write — support@petstorymosaic.com. I answer every email myself; you are not writing to a queue.

Do I have to pay anything to see it?

No card, no deposit, nothing up front. Send their photographs and within 48 hours the finished portrait comes back to you — the whole thing, zoom and all, not a sample. If it isn’t right, you walk away and owe nothing.

What if it doesn’t look like them?

Then it isn’t finished. I go back and build it again — a different photograph as the portrait, a different arrangement, whatever it takes — and you see it again. Nothing is printed until you have looked at it and said yes. That is the whole reason the preview is free and unhurried.

How many photos do I need — and what if mine are old and blurry?

Fifty is enough to begin; a hundred to three hundred is where the likeness comes out truest. Blurry ones, scans of old prints, a screenshot from a phone that died years ago — all of it works. In the finished portrait each photograph sits at about the size of a thumbnail, so what carries is the colour and the light, not the sharpness. One clear photograph of their face becomes the portrait itself; the rest can be whatever you have. More about choosing them →

Can I order more than one?

Yes, and it is a common thing to want — one for each animal, or one to keep and one to give. The form takes a single portrait at a time, so the simplest way is to begin the first one; then write to me and I will set up the rest, so you are not typing everything again. Each portrait keeps its own set of photographs and its own free preview, and you decide on each one separately.

Are the tiles really my photographs, or is this AI?

Every tile is a photograph you sent. Nothing is generated, nothing is invented, and there are no stock images anywhere in it. Technology does the sorting: it finds their face and ranges hundreds of pictures by colour and light, so the dark ones gather in their nose and the bright ones build the light of their chest. It only ever arranges what is real.

Who actually makes it?

A person, not a service. I pick the photograph the portrait is built around and prepare it, set how it is built for their particular face, then look at what came out up close and do it again if it is not them yet; the light in their eyes I finish by hand. Placing three hundred tiles by colour is the one part no hand can do — that is computed. Everything around it is me, from the first email to the day it ships.

How long does it take, and how does it ship?

Your free preview comes within 48 hours. Once you approve it and the order is paid, printing takes about five business days — for most addresses that is about two weeks from approval to the wall. Shipping is included in every price, anywhere in the fifty states, to a street address: a canvas this size cannot travel to a PO box or to a military APO/FPO address. We ship within the US for now — if you are outside it, write to me before you begin and I will tell you what we can do. And if it arrives damaged, photograph the box as well as the canvas and I will print it again, no argument.

What happens to my photographs?

They are used to make your portrait and nothing else. They are never shown to anyone without your permission, never used as examples, never sold. Your originals stay where they are — the copies I hold are deleted ninety days after your canvas arrives, or the same day if you ask me sooner. What happens to your photographs →

Yes. It is the same assembly you can watch here, made from your own portrait — about two minutes, in 4K at sixty frames a second, with music, and the file is yours to keep.
